Choucroute Dinner with Proof Wine and Spirits

Join us for a night of traditional Choucroute, a dish that is near and dear to the heart of Chef Todd Whitney, whose previous posts have included Executive Chef positions at both Vin Rouge and J Betski’s.

Choucroute Garnie is a classic Alsatian recipe, pairing fermented cabbage with sausages and other salted meats. For this dinner, Chef Whitney will be preparing, in house, four different styles of sausage, to be served over Sauerkraut, alongside such treats as Kasseler, Smoked Ham, Ham Hock, Trotter and Smoked Bacon. We can think of no better way to welcome the cooler fall evenings than with this hearty classic, expertly prepared by Chef Whitney.

We have selected 5 delicious German and Alsatian crus for the dinner, from the portfolio of our friends at Proof Wine and Spirits. We’re eager for this opportunity to demonstrate for you a bit of the versatility of these wonderful Germanic white wines.

De Maison Selections Wine Dinner

De Maison Selections is the exclusive US importer of exceptional wines, ciders, sherries and spirits from their family of independent producers in Spain and France. De Maison Selections was founded by André Tamers in 1996, upon his return from a three-year journey throughout Spain. It was at this time that we first met André. He named his company in honor of his mother, whose family roots go back to Haute-Savoie in France. Her father had three children, all daughters, thus the name De Maison was destined to disappear. In choosing this moniker, André was able to effect a continuation of the De Maison family name, which would not otherwise have been possible.

The focus of the portfolio is on exceptional family-held properties from Spain and France, which are rooted in their land, and show a respect for their ecology and heritage. It is this originality of identity and intent which defines individual producers in crafting their expression of each wine. The current generation of producers De Maison represents perpetuate their families’ commitment to the sustainability of their culture and environment. For André and his company, their devotion to these values extends to company-wide initiatives such as a solar powered home-office, cold-chain technology, creative and educational initiatives, philanthropy and progressive logistics, among other initiatives.

It’s hard for us to believe that this will be our first wine dinner with De Maison, and we are very excited for it. Chef Todd Whitney sat down with Philippe Broome, the regional sales manager for De Maison, and tasted through about a dozen wines to make selections for the dinner. If you’ve been to any of our previous dinners, you are well aware of Chef Whitney’s mastery in the art of food and wine parings. This promises to be a phenomenal evening, which you will not want to miss!

We are pleased to be joined, once again, by Joseph Frederick of Rosenthal Wine Merchant, to bring to you another fantastic wine dinner!

Neal Rosenthal has been importing artisanal wine from France and Italy into the United States for more than 30 years. Many of our favorite wines are part of the Rosenthal portfolio, and the wines all share a fidelity to place and tradition, above all else. Maybe that’s why, as trends come and go, Rosenthal Wine Merchant stays at the top of everyone’s list of the very best wine importers. Joseph has become a favorite here at Rue Cler, and we’re always happy to have him come by to teach us a thing or two, and to share some great wines.

We recently sat down with Chef Whitney to select the wines and discuss menu pairings. If you have been to one of these dinners in the past, you know that there is a great meal waiting for you, with great wines to match. Some of the treats this time include a rare new release of one of our favorite white Burgundy producers, Domaine Prudhon, as well as a Cornas from Domaine Lionnet which we’ll be pouring from magnum.

Vintage ’59 Wine Dinner – 5/8

We are excited to welcome Deb Lewis, and Vintage ’59, back to Rue Cler for another paired dinner. Last year’s Vintage ’59 dinner was truly outstanding, and we have an equally excellent line-up planned for this year. We’ve known Vintage ’59 founder, Roy Cloud, for over 20 years, going all the way back to our days in the wine business in the DC area. We’ve known Deb for nearly as long, and have an immense respect for her knowledge and palate.

The wines we’ve selected for this event are especially exciting. There’s the new release from Champagne Jacquesson, based on the excellent 2012 vintage. Jacquesson is a legendary house that continues to grow, stretch, and put out better and better wines. It is a treat to show a Burgundy from the outstanding 2015 vintage, particularly the gem of the Voillot holdings, Volnay Champans. We have the deep, intense Cairanne from Haut-Cances, where the vines are over 100 years old. The wines from Le Rocher des Violettes have been a revelation, and this time we get to pour the cuvée, from the oldest chenin vines.

As always, we’ve worked out an excellent menu tasting with Chef Todd Whitney, and the wines will be available for purchase, in limited quantities and at special prices, on the evening of the event. Rest assured, this will be an occasion that you won’t want to miss!

Matthiason Wines Paired Dinner

We are excited to welcome Jill Klien Matthiasson, of Matthiasson Wines, for what is sure to be another incredible dinner!

Jon Bonné crowned Steve Matthiasson winemaker of the year in 2014, but we had heard rumblings about his wines for a while before, from our friends out west. As one of the leading wineries of the New California Movement, Matthiasson is the go to viticulturist in Napa and Sonoma, specializing in sustainable farming techniques, and a restrained, elegant style of wine. Steve and Jill Klein both have backgrounds in farming, Jill having studied botany, Steve working in the vineyards and co-authoring a book on sustainable vineyard practices. A family owned and operated winery, which has rooted itself as one of the leaders of sustainable and organic farming, Matthiasson’s wines reflect the purity of the variety, as well as the specific sites in which they are grown. Offering classic representations of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, they also produce grapes unique to the area, such as Ribolla Gialla, Refosco, and Petit Verdot.

“Wine is made in the Vineyard” is the winemaking philosophy of Matthiasson. This attitude results in wines that are perfectly balanced and graceful, without sacrificing the natural power of California. These wines are a beautiful representation of the organic and sustainable farming practices which the Matthiassons espouse.
