Génot-Boulanger Wine Dinner

It isn’t every day that a wine maker from a storied Burgundy estate makes his way to our neck of the woods, so when our friend Jeff Kellogg shot us an email to ask if we would like to host a dinner with Guillaume Lavollée of Génot-Boulanger, we said “hell yes!” The wines of Génot-Boulanger had been out of the NC market for some time, so we were really excited to see them back. We enjoyed them in the past, and heard rumor that the quality was better than ever, with the new generation in charge (this is a theme up and down the Côtes).

Guillaume and Aude Lavollée are the fourth generation of vignerons at Génot-Boulanger. Their wines are produced exclusively from estate-owned vineyards, located along all three Burgundy Côtes, from Chambolle Musigny, down to the domaine in Meursault, and on to Mercurey. Génot-Boulanger is one of only a few family-owned Burgundian domaines to produce such a diverse range. What is so striking about the current wines is the real upsurge in quality due to the commitment to farming shown by this new generation. Since 2008, Guillaume and Aude have worked painstakingly to improve the quality of their wines by improving their farming methods; first converting to organic farming practices, then experimenting with biodynamics. The domaine’s philosophy is “maximum work in the vineyards, for minimum intervention in the cuverie.” The wines are more graceful and deep than they have ever been, while (first and foremost) being true to their terroir.
